Many drivers are leaving their cars in park or trading them in altogether for the more economical motor scooter. While scooters can be a great way to save money and in many cases reduce parking hassles, much of the same laws that apply to car and motorcycle owners are applicable to scooter drivers. Most states require owners to obtain basic scooter insurance coverage, which is often categorized under motorcycle insurance, depending on the provider.
When searching for scooter insurance, it is important to know your options in order to ensure you get the coverage you need at the most affordable rate. You should compare rates from at least a few reputable insurance companies before deciding on a provider. Rates vary based on a variety of factors. In many cases, discounts are provided for:
- Mature drivers – drivers over a certain age determined by the insurer
- Safe driving record – no accidents or traffic violations within a predetermined time period
- Safety course – completing a motorcycle (scooter) safety course like the one provided by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation
- Multiple vehicle coverage – Adding other vehicles to your policy
As is the case with cars and other vehicles, scooter drivers have many options, depending on their needs. It is important to understand the types of scooter insurance coverage available before making a decision. Some key types of coverage to consider include:
- Collision – covers repairs or replacement costs for your scooter if it is damaged in an accident or rolls over; this may be required if you lease or rent your scooter
- Comprehensive physical damage – covers damage to your scooter caused by theft, vandalism and natural disasters (wind, storm, etc.)
- Bodily injury liability – insures you for injury, death and property damage if you are at fault in an accident; also can include legal fees and lost wage
- Medical (personal injury protection) – protects you if you or a passenger is injured, regardless of who is at fault
- Uninsured or underinsured motorist – covers injuries or damages to you, your passenger or your scooter caused by a driver who does not have proper insurance
- Roadside assistance – pays for towing, labor, locksmith, battery jump-start and other charges resulting from mechanical issues with your scooter
Certain states require scooter drivers to carry minimum amounts of specific types of coverage. When obtaining a quote, your insurance agent should provide you with minimum requirements as well as higher coverage options. If he or she is not knowledgeable on your state’s requirements, you may want to consider a different provider.
Your final insurance rate will depend on a number of factors including discounts, where you live and the amount of coverage you opt to carry. You have many options when it comes to scooter insurance, so it is important to determine what coverage best suits you and to be prepared when speaking with an insurance agent.
