cheapest i have found is AIG for about 115$ a month for full coverage, and they will also let me knock that down to liability during the winter time when i am not driving the bike. geico and progressive both wanted upwards of 210$. my question is, are there any places that i should try that you think might be able to beat AIG’s 115 a month for full coverage. i am 21 years old and have 1 ticket on my record of 14 mph over about a year ago. the bike is a 2006 kawasaki zx6r. thanks

exactly on an average, with no tickets and a first time driver, how much cheaper is motorcycle insurance.

that depends on a lot of factors, including, but not limited to:

- your age, and in some cases, riding experience (Geico asked me. Progressive didn’t)
- the size/style of bike (a 600cc sportbike is more expensive to insure than a 1200cc cruiser)
- the cost of the bike
- how much coverage are you planning to carry?
- area of the country (In OH, i get 6-7 months of riding in a year. In AZ or FL, they get more riding time, so they pay more. theft rates in FL are also insane, so that drives up their premiums as well)

If you purchase only the minimum required coverage (liability), I’m sure you could find quotes for under $100 a year.

But realistically, you want injury coverage. Personally, I have a lot of un-insured/under-insured motorist coverage so my injuries are covered if some idiot hits me. I don’t carry ANY coverage on my bike, because it’s simply not worth very much.

Collision Coverage Insurance on a Motorcycle – Do I need it? by Attorney Fran Haasch

I would like to start this article by saying thank you and Happy Holidays to all the loyal readers of Born To Ride; my sincerest wishes for health, prosperity and happiness in the coming new year.

Last months article addressed potential problems if you were involved in a motorcycle accident and the driver causing the accident did not have the appropriate insurance coverage to repair the property damage to your motorcycle

So, what can you do to protect yourself in this situation? Collision Coverage. Collision coverage on your own insurance policy will pay for the damage to your motorcycle or vehicle. When you are purchasing this coverage please carefully consider the deductible that you choose they generally are in amounts of $250.00, $500.00 or $1,000.00. If you decide to use your own insurance for your Property Damage (PD), your deductible will be subtracted from a reimbursement check you are issued to cover the damages. Some insurance companies will subrogate against the at-fault insurance company, which means your insurance company will attempt to collect your deductible for you which can take up to several months. If you have custom parts on your motorcycle, i.e. pipes, chrome accessories or custom paint, you may want to purchase extra insurance coverage in addition to Collision. Custom Accessories or Optional Equipment coverage will cover these extras. As a rule of thumb, figure out how much you have invested in customization to your motorcycle, for instance, if you have $5,000.00 you would want to purchase $5,000.00 in custom coverage.

If damages to a motorcycle or vehicle are approximately 80% of the value of the motorcycle or vehicle the insurance company is allowed, under Florida Law, to declare that motorcycle or vehicle a total loss. Insurance companies pay book value, not necessarily replacement value or what you might owe to your lien holder. What can you do to protect yourself in this situation if you owe more than the bike is worth? Gap Insurance, which will be the topic of next months exciting article.

I barely sped 3 times & gave that information out for informational purposes only I abide by the speed limit. Please keep your crude comments to yourself & do everybody on yahoo answers a big deal of help & answer the question then MOVE ON!

Get an old non sport model bike. Sport models are much higher insurance, especially with a bad driving record. Buy it outright so you do not have to get full coverage. Take a safety course for the discount it gives you on insurance. If you can, find a way to garage the bike since that is normally a discount as well.

Then call an agent or hit the websites to get a quote. You are going to need to give them some information on the bike so you need to have an idea of what you are going to buy.

From my experience in Colorado most of my buddies carry Geico since they came in with the lowest premium. Multi-vehicle discount or having a history with an insurance company can sometimes beat them, so make sure to call you current insurance company.

Warning, under 21 with multiple speeding tickets means you are going to pay through the nose. You will see a small drop at 21, a bigger drop at 25, and some major drops if you slow down and let those tickets drop off your record.

And I need full coverage. Any idea? I’m getting the new 2008 ninja. I’m an experienced rider, but I have no record of motorcycling at all. I used to ride in my country. But here, nope. no record. All i can do to reduce my insurance cost is take the MSF course. Dont even have an american driver’s/motorcycler’s license yet.

Shop around. You can hire an insurance broker and they will find the best rate for you. That’s what I have to do. I’m paying $135/month with Progressive Drive. It is ridiculous. They don’t take into account that I don’t ride my bike all the time. I have a car for that. Geico won’t even insure me at all.

So I know this question is going to probably get lots of spam answers from robots and insurance salesmen, but I can tell the difference, so hopefully I get some answers from real people.

What is the cheapest company for motorcycle insurance you’ve ever used? I have one bike (GSXR750), and I plan to buy a second bike, however the insurance company wants to charge me just as much for the second bike as the first. Its pretty rediculous to pay the full cost of both bikes, when you can only ride one at a time. You should be able to just buy one set of liability and collision insurance and use it on both, since your only going to be riding one at a time, you can’t possibly be "liable" for both, or have a "collision" with both at once. So why do you have to pay for both at once?

Anyways, so far the cheapest I’ve personally found is State farm, which is sort of odd because they are definetly not the cheapest when it comes to my car/home insurance. My car/home insurance is much more expensive than state farm on motorcycles. I called geicko for their powersports insurance, and for identical coverage, they want to charge 5X as much, seriously, 5X. State farm is around $200 a year for me, Geico wanted about $950 for the identical package.

Is there any company you’ve used that’s cheaper, or that could allow you to group bikes under one umbrella?

I am a rider with 10 years of driving experience but my license lapsed and I was forced to start over as a new driver (M1 graduated liecense). I’m married, in my 30′s, I drive a 1999 Yamaha YZF R-6 and have never made any claims.
I live in Ottawa, Canada.

You’d really have to check a bunch of them for prices. Different companies have different critiria. Don’t call the 800 number or get a web quote. Call your local agent for each company that you want a quote from. Check the yellow pages.

think you have your wires crossed……you have to have liability, in case you hit somebody…………and that dont cover your repairs, or replacement if it gets stolen…….

I’m purchasing a sports bike soon but don’t know where i can find the cheapest insurance for it. If you know please share. I live in NJ.

Progressive is the cheapest that I can find but there are alot of things that go into the cost of insurance such age, driving record, the actual bike, whether or not it will be kept in a garage, and even your credit score. Friends of mine have found statefarm and allstate to give them better rates so your best bet would be to call a few different agents. You can also get discounts for insuring multiple cars and even you house with the same company so every situation will be different. I know this didn’t really answer your question but I hope it can help a little bit at least.

here’s the problem, and it wont matter if u are in a car or on a bike. from 16 to 25, if u are male and unmarried, u will wind up gettin soaked for the highest rates, and this is without having tickets. havin tickets will tell the insurance guy ‘this guy is reckless’, and the insurance will go up higher.

now u didnt say what bike u want. as sure as god makes rain, if u say sport bike to an insurance agent and ur not over 25, ur insurance most likely will rival that of a recently convicted drunk driver that just got his license reinstated…especially a race type bike. remember also that if u have to finance a bike, full coverage will most likely be made manditory. u might not like this, but if u want cheaper insurance, leave the sport bikes alone and get a cruiser. personally, i use progressive, but like i said, i dont think u’ll have much luck gettin ‘fair’ rates at ur age.

Bad news, you are not going to find "Cheap Insurance" an 18 year old who wants to insure either an R6 or R1 and has no prior riding experience, you are a high risk.

lets say that you buy the bike for $6.000.00 and your insurance is $3.000.00 that is $9.000.00 for your first year.

That is a lot of cash for a college student.

If you choose a non sport bike you can cut your insurance by about 33% but it will still be high because of your age.

Motorcycle insurance is CHEAPER than cars. I pay around $125 for a year….FULL COVERAGE, etc. through Progressive for my H-D. Check around and compare.

I am planning on buying a 150cc scooter in the Spring. In Michigan, my home state, these are considered motorcycles. Also, in Michigan, they must be insured. My questions are:

(1) If I am only riding my scooter for three months out of the year, will I still have to pay for insurance during the fall and winter?

2) I’m not sure of the cheapest insurance in your state. See if anyone in your area offers Foremost Insurance. It’s a company owned by Farmers. From the prices I’ve seen average ANNUAL premium is around $50. No sense in paying monthly if it’s only $50 bucks a year

Progressive was the cheapest by far, offered the best package of coverage, and was EASY to contact. They were also very patient with checking differences in coverages for me and gave me multiple options to choose from. Then, when I traded in my old motorcycle for a bigger brand new one, I was able to use their on-line tools to check all the possible variables to find the best package for me.

I have had a few blemishes on my record, some tickets and an accident, but my state requires full coverage insurance on a bike that is not paid in full, what are your suggestions??

Typically, insurance rates will vary from State to State and can even vary by ZIPCODE! It also will depend on the type of bike, coverages, limits of liability, and driving record. Some companies run credit scores and MOST run a motor vehicle report and CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report to see about undisclosed accident involvement.

The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent. Don’t go across town, or to some other city – look for someone CLOSE. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems, and give you rate comparisons of several different companies.

An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can.

In my agency, we have companies that do NOT run a credit score and welcome drivers with "less than perfect" driving records and specialize in motorcycle insurance. Some of the companies to look for are Progressive, Dairyland, AIG, Foremost, American Modern Home and Pacific Specialty.

Most of the replies on this site say "go to this on-line carrier or that on-line carrier or that 1-800 number" but I’m sure that when you do, you will find some impersonal computer user with a script to work from and you won’t be able to talk with the same person every time you have a problem!

I called around and found that Progressive had the best for me. I only pay $75.00 per year for my motorcycle ins. I too have a great driving record. State farm is VERY expensive. You could also try AIG but I heard that they were having some financial difficulties.

I suggest www.homeforchrome.com. It’s a company called Dalton-Timmis Insurance. They’ve got great deals and they specialize in motorcycle insurance. I went from the Co-operators to Dalton-Timmis and I’m saving approximately $650 per year on my bike insurance.

Other than that, I don’t really think that they have cheap insurance in Ontario. When I was living there in 2002-2003, I was paying $280 per month for my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. When I moved to Alberta, I saved $200 per month. If you want cheap insurance, you’ll have to leave Ontario.

Insurance here is kind of strange. If you go to Assurland, you get a lot of quotes, but be care full about them. If you are not French speaking person, try to contact AXA, they have English speaking agents all around France, they are not the cheapest ones, but they have good coverage. Not all their agents are good, so it is better to call a few before you find the best one. The difference can be a few hundred euros.

I got three quotes from three different insurence companies for a 2005 Honda 1100cc Sabre with under 2000 miles for $6300, all three with the same type of coverage. The first quote I got from State farm they gave me a quote for $650 for the year, the second was Geico they gave me a quote for $462 for the year, the third was Progressive they quoted me with only $220 for the year with the same exact coverage as the other 2. I am 36 years old have been riding a motorcycle for about 2 years and I am buying this 2005 1100cc Sabre. Why is Progressive so much cheaper, has anybody else used Progressive and are they a good insurance company. It just sounds too good to be true.

I don’t know why? but they are! weird huh. My buddy is 36 and has been riding for a bunch of years and got his for like $110 a year! THAT’S CRAZY! He keeps telling me to switch I’m sure I will soon.
I assume because they are such a big Company that it makes it easier to give better quotes. kinda like, why sell a few policy’s a day for $300 when they can 20 policy’s for half that and still make big bucks! I don’t know just my thought on it anyways.

I am looking to learn how to ride a motorcycle and am looking for a bike that is easy to learn, cheap to run, cheap on insurance and a good ride. Are older bikes cheaper? Are some brands better on insurance than others? Thanks.

dual sport bikes: very cheap on insurance
Suzuki DRZ400S
Suzuki DR650
Honda XL650S
(cannot recommend the Kawasaki KLR650 cause it has a engine oil consumption problem)

sport and dual sport bikes are much easier to learn to and to ride, cruiser bikes are slow and heavy, unbalanced and are hard to learn for the beginner

When I got my insurance i called the following companies:
Geiko
State Farm (I have my auto and home policy with them)
Progressive
esurance.com
Nationwide

Nationwide was the cheapest, at least $300 cheaper than State Farm with a multi vehicle discount! Motorcycle insurance policies vary greatly, so the best thing to do is contact at least 5 and go for the best deal.

Insurance companys don’t want to write bikes in Ontario. You could try at Insurance Hotline as they compare the rates from all companies licenced to sell insurance in Ontario.

I have liberty Mutual. I have heard that countrywide is also inexpensive. You want to find a company that quotes a price based on the number of cc’s instead of whether it’s a sportbike or standard or whatever. good luck and ride safe.

I am looking to finanace a bike, and need to find some insurance. Most of the quotes I have gotten have been at least $400 a month. I am trying to find something a lot cheaper. Do you have to have full coverage when financing or can you just get basic coverage like collision or something like that?

WOAH! Sounds to me like you’re looking to insure a "crotch rocket"!!

Back up, re-group and reconsider buying a cruiser. Your age and riding experience (ON THE ROAD) count a lot also.

A good rule of thumb is to remember this: the closer you have to get to the horizontal position to ride the bike, the HIGHER your premiums will be! So, the closer you come to an upright riding position, the LOWER your premiums will be.

Yamaha had a program that if you finance LESS than $10,000 – they were NOT requiring physical damage insurance. YOU are STILL responsible for the damage (AND the loan value) if something happens to the bike. You are actually "self insuring" which is the CHEAPEST way to go, but, not always the most economical!

Look around for an independent agent in your area that specializes in bike insurance. In FL, look for the Specialty Insurance Agents logo and you should be able to find someone to help! There are several companies that specialize in or have competitive M/C insurance rates – Progressive, Dairyland, AIG, Foremost, American Modern Home, GMAC (in some States) just to name a few. The is also an internet provider that is something like BIKELINE (sp?)
