I live in Ontario, I live like 2 km from my school. It would save me a lot of time and it would be much more convenient to ride to moped then walk or bus.

I can find a cheap used moped, but I’m just curious what the pricing would be?

I’m 17, I don’t even have my M1 yet. I have my G2, don’t know if that matters?

Yes. You need insurance and a helmet and you need to register it.. If it’s capable of 25 MPH it’s a motorcycle even if it’s smaller than 50cc. Here are the laws.

my licence is full uk car and i done my cbt but when i look online to do insurance quotes and select licence type it always colmes up full moped, provisional moped, full motorcycle, european moped etc and no full uk car what licence type shall i put because of this ?

That depends, do you have category P displayed on the back of your photocard? If not then you need to put provisional moped and apply L plates to your moped. If you have a Category P then you put full moped and do not need to apply L plates.

No, exhaust system will not increase the cost of insurance. How will the insurance company know the performance exhaust has been fitted? Unless you tell them, they will never know.

You have been told a load of rubbish. Your parents would have to have a motorbike licence to allow them to drive. The Insurers will see straight away that the bike is for you not them.

My girlfriend has a 50cc moped (we’re both 16), which she is insured on (3rd party f+t).

I have just got my provisional and passed my CBT and my question is, could she just add me as a named driver to her moped insurance, and would that legally allow me to use her moped?

Yes it is quite possible so long as you do not use it as a main rider would in that you could not use it to commute to school/work.
May cost quite a bit as you clearly do not live at the same address. It would need to be returned to her home address for overnight parking and not kept at yours for any length of time.

I am buying a moped second hand for £300 and I am buying my insurance soon but I want to know if it is worth me buying the Comprehensive type of cover.

Comprehensive cover is the most exspensive at £505.70
Third Party Fire & Theft cover is £377.06
Third Party Only cover is £291.71

I can save over £200 if I just get the Third Party Only cover but is it worth me spending the extra £200 to get full Comprehensive?

Get comprehensive if you know that you will not keep enough money in the bank to replace that moped in case of an accident.

Get liability only (which saves tons of money) if you know that you will be able to replace that moped in case anything happens to it.
Sometimes you have to take risks in life to save money

Hi yes you will be covered on the date you took it out so from 14th may you will be insured you don’t have to wait for your papers, because when they come in the post 5 days time it will say cover start from 14th may. And yes it will be a month from the 14th of may so next payment be 14th of June this is if you are paying monthly not yearly.

I have recently renewed my insurance policy for my moped. I used to use it alot for commuting to work. However, I have a new job where I now need to use my car on a daily basis. If I sold my moped would I be able to cancel my insurance or would I have to pay it until the end of the year?

You can’t – insurance for you is always going to be determined by whether you are under twenty five, and your marital status. Gender is not something that you can do anything about, but that affects insurance premiums too. Women are cheaper to insure than men.

Your absolute best alternative would be to get your parents to add your vehicle and you to their policy. It doesn’t get any cheaper than that.

Make sure you don’t just search for moped insurance companies… motorcycle insurance companies also insure mopeds (they will insure any bike, regardless of CC).

When getting quotes, check all levels of cover (Fully Comp, TPFT and Third Party Only) as sometimes more cover costs less (strange but true).

If I buy a 50 cc moped from a private seller, can I drive it back to my house as along as I have my provisional, cbt and the moped has tax and mot?

You cannot even legally park on the road from the moment it becomes yours without breaking the law and making it vulnerable to seizure and you to 6 points and a £200 plus fine – don’t even think about it.
If you agree to buy set a date a few days away so you can arrange insurance to start when you collect it.
There are no circumstances whatsoever when you can ride, drive or even park a vehicle on the road unless you have insurance for it.

Right, im 17 in a couple of weeks. For my 16th birthday I bought myself a little 50cc moped. couple of months after I had a crash on it with another car but it wasnt my fault and I didn’t make a claim on my insurance?

When I buy car insurance do I have to tell them I have had the crash and can I say i’ve got a year no claims?

I would tell them that you have had a non-fault accident. Insurers will only penalise you for fault accidents, so it wont affect the price of your insurance, and you then have the peace of mind that you have declared it to the insurer, so they cannot void your policy for non-disclosure.

There is absolutely no point anyone here making a wild guess on how much your insurance will cost – it won’t help you at all. You’ll just have to phone or e-mail the various insurance companies and brokers, just like we do.

All insurance companies will require your driving licence details and the vehicle details, before they will offer you a quote. That’s how motor insurance works.

I’ve heard some people say $100 a YEAR. And some $250 a MONTH. Big difference. Who is more correct?

pretty inexpensive with a clean driving record. if you have driven a car for some time and have a bad record (tickets, dui, at fault accidents, etc) they will consider that when insuring you. so the cleaner, the better

that said here in SoCal i pay roughly $90 a year for basic liability. that is all you need to ride one. i also have uninsured / under-insured coverage that is around $16 a year, and comprehensive coverage which covers theft, fire, incidental damage, loss….essentially all that "my bike is gone" stuff. that is around $116 a year. i have one other thing, too. but i forget what it is.

total cost to me is $224 a year. this is with GEICO Powersports insurance, and the value of the scoot (150cc) is $3,500. i have been licensed 17 years and have a spotless driving record. i am also a new rider with just a permit and have NOT taken the MSF course. if i complete the course and become fully licensed i am told my rate will be even lower

The Honda Gyro is a family of small, three-wheeled, single-occupant vehicles sold primarily in Japan, and often used for delivery or express service. These vehicles are tilting three wheelers. Bought myself a speedfight 2, 50cc, 1999 reg. Could anyone tell me good, cheap moped insurance companies which don’t charge stupid amounts?

Lexham Insurance (http://www.lexhaminsurance.co.uk ) are good for mopeds and scooters (best price is over the phone and haggling usually helps).

Another place to check is The Bike Insurer (http://www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk ) – it’s a price comparison site for motorcycle & moped insurance.

The above two are the ones I recommend trying first but you could also try using the bike insurance sections on confused.com, comparethemarket.com and gocompare.com

Make sure you get quotes for all levels of cover (Fully Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft and Third Party Only) as you may be surprised by the results.

By the way, when searching for "moped insurance", you might be better searching for "motorcycle insurance" as nearly all motorcycle insurance companies cover mopeds.

I have a court date for the end of may, that will determine if my insurance will go up. Can I apply for insurance without them knowing about the charge yet? I am probably going to get the moped whatever the cost of the insurance will be either way, but I don’t want to have a red flag on me before the court date when they do a background check. Can insurance companies see what you’ve been charged with before the actual conviction? I just don’t want them to see that I got in legal trouble, before it is removed from the record.

Typically, insurance rates are filed by the various insurance companies that are licensed to do business in your State, and they vary from State to State.

The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems.

An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can. Be sure to ask them if they write motorcycle insurance.

A lot of folks say "PROGRESSIVE" and as an agent, I use them but, they are NOT always the best. Each rider is judged by his/her own merits – experience (riding a motorcycle ON THE STREET, type of bike, age, driving record, credit score – so, you might look for American Modern Home, Pacific Specialty, Foremost, Dairyland, Victoria (just to name a few.)

As far as liability only, we write it for as low as $46.00 per YEAR!! So, be sure to look around!

Since your son is ONLY 16, he cannot sign a contract and an insurance policy IS a contract between you and the insurance company. He will have to be 18 before he can sign on his own.

You might also REQUIRE him to take a Motorcycle Safety Course – just ask around at your local motorcycle shops and they can tell you how to contact a local instructor.

And just a rule of thumb: The closer you come to riding straight up and down, the lower the rates will be. The obverse of this is ALSO true…the more you have to lean forward becoming closer to the horizontal to ride the bike, the HIGHER the rates will be.

I have an Aprilia SR 50, i came off of it a while ago. I paid £1800 for the bike and the repairs where £1200. Today i found out it has been classed as written off as the repairs are too much. Im happy as im getting a new bike

Im allowed to do my ped up but nothing that will effect the insurance. I was wondering that if i de-restricted my moped whether i could pay more on insurance for modifications.

Hi, i had a 49cc baotian bt49 moped stolen from outside my home just before christmas. It was insured under third party fire and theft so as you do when you get something stolen you put in a claim which i did. The theif that nicked it was driving around my area on it and was seen several times but when i told the police they told me i wasnt able to kncok them off it ect because it would of landed me in a load of trouble. Little did i no after 14 days of the bike being stolen from outside my home it got found by the police burnt out. Now after about 3 weeks of me filing the claim i got a letter of my insurers ( Rampdale/KGM ) saying that there will be no claim on this incident as it is my own fault due to lack of care and attention ( supposidly ) and that the bike was with a recovery company, clocking up charges of £ 10 storeage a day. Now previous to this worry about weather i would have to pay the storage charge or not i got told by my insurance that all costs to the recovery company will be paid for by them ( my insurers ).

Anyway me thinking i was going to be accepted for my claim i went and bought a new 49cc moped and was told that i could transfer my policy over onto this new moped that i had bought, but then they turn round and said, " oh no sorry we cannot transfer this policy over onto your new bike because its in the middle of being in a claim ". So i had to then pay over £ 400 for a new policy ( and lost my no claims ) which ment it went up quite a bit seen’s as my first policy was only in the
£ 300 bracket. Then however after getting the new moped insured under the same insurers i got a letter 3 months after the OLD moped was burnt out i received a letter on 11th feb 09 telling me that my policy on the old bike did not make a valid claim so therefore i my self owe them £ 200 in storage fees as they have paid the salvage company the money that was owed from them picking it up from the scene where it was burnt out from. But what i dont understand is i was told that all the costs to the recovery/salvage company would be paid for under my insurance policy and that i did not have to worry and now all of a sudden im left with a £ 200 instant fine that i have to pay them back within 14 days? It sounds like ive been ripped off left right and center with this insurance company so there are a few questions that i wanted to know if any one could help me with.

1.) Do i have to pay this £ 200 that they are asking for, for the recovery of the moped

2.) Even though i lost my no claims and the price went up on my new policy do i still loose it even though they havent paid out ?

3.) What would be the consquences if the £ 200 wasnt paid back to them?

4.) And what do i do about the policy on my old bike? they are still taking money out of the bank for it do i cancel it or what?

Please help us on this one because like i said i don’t no what they are playing at but surley this carnt all be right? … I’ve been told ive got 14 days from the 11th feb to respond. Oh and i can apparanlty pay for the costs £ 15 a week? But should i have to do this??

Okay, I’m in the US, but most of this should be the same:

1) Theoretically you are obligated to pay the tow yard for the storage costs incurred. It’s going to keep rising the longer it’s there.

2) Not sure if I understand this one. You seem to be asking if your accident/claims history will show "no claims". Over here, claims don’t count until something is paid out.

3) If the tow yard isn’t paid for the storage, they will sell the moped, then bill you for the storage costs. They will send it out to a collection agency. Storage costs can usually be negotiated. The tow yard would rather get something than nothing.

4) Cancel your old policy, have them pro-rate your premium back to the date that it was stolen. You should have a police report to confirm the date that the moped was nicked. The insurance company should refund you any unused premium from this date forward.

moped mot is about £30 a year

then you need the helmat and clohing which cost around £100 if you get cheap stuff

It doesn’t pay to get Cheap Insurance. Cover is very restricted and it is more than likely he will make a claim in his first year for something or other. A lot of us do. bike was 700 quid for a 55 plate, dont need anythin newer than that really as when u come to sell it it wud of depreciated loads!

My moped was seized and taken to Perivale Pound where it was subsequently destroyed. It was taken because they mistakenly thought I needed a more recent CBT certificate. I have comprehensive insurance to cover me for my moped. My broker told me I could not claim from this policy as it was seized legally even if this was wrongly done.

Most policies exclude coverage for government seizure.

However, we can’t see your policy to see if it has this language. So report the claim and see what happens. Worst case…the adjuster tells you it’s not covered.

I own a 50cc yamaha. In Texas you do not need a Class M endorsement if the moped in under 50cc. Most mopeds are 49cc even though they say 50cc.

The insurance is very cheap. I have full coverage and I pay $200 a year.

why would you want to insure a Moped? They’re legal to operate most places, with no registration required in most states. Unless it’s over 50cc, then you’ll need to register it. I have NO idea on Moped insurance, never heard of it before.

once youve passed your cbt you can not ride with out insurance highly illegal go to a comparison insurancwe website like youve most likely seen on tv and type all your bikes information in and your personal information in and it will find you the cheapest insurance… tax is also a illegal thing not to have you should have a tax disc on your bike somewhere if not go to the post office and find a motorcycle tax renewal form and fill that it and you will also need an m.o.t to make sure that your bike is road safe it should say on the documents that you got with your bike when it runs out if not just google where you nearest and cheapest m.o.t station is and book ahead and you can legaly ride the bike down there just aslong as youve booked it and have insurance hope this helps

This is because it is illegal to push a moped, motorcycle or scooter on the pavement. It is illegal to push any motor vehicle along the pavement. Since you cannot do it, the question of insurance does not arise.

If it has broken down, you are required by law to push it along the road.

NJ Law:
Electric Bicycles that go under 20 m.p.h. are LEGAL in New Jersey and are considered ‘bicycles’. They do not require anything that a normal bicycle doesn’t require. Here is the actual law taken from the NJ code:

C.39:4-14.10 Electric personal assistive mobility device defined; regulations concerning.

1. a. As used in this act, “electric personal assistive mobility device” means a self-balancing non-tandem two wheeled device designed to transport one person which uses an electric propulsion system with average power of 750 watts (one horsepower), whose maximum speed on a paved level surface, when powered solely by such a propulsion system while operated by a person weighing 170 pounds is less than 20 miles per hour. The device shall not be considered a motorized wheelchair, motorized bicycle, motorcycle, motorized scooter, motorized skateboard, vehicle or motor vehicle.

b. An electric personal assistive mobility device may be operated on the public highways, sidewalks and bicycle paths of the State. Every person operating such a device shall be granted all of the rights and be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a bicycle by chapter four of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes except as to those provisions thereof which by their nature can have no application.

c. The operator of an electric personal assistive mobility device shall not be required to obtain a driver’s license therefor or to register the device. The operator shall not be required to furnish proof of having liability insurance for the device or other proof of financial responsibility.

d. The governing body of any municipality may, by ordinance, regulate the operation of electric personal assistive mobility devices upon the roadways and public properties under municipal jurisdiction. The State or the governing body of any county or municipality may prohibit their operation on any public highway under its jurisdiction where the speed limit is greater than 25 miles per hour.

e. Notwithstanding the other provisions of this section, an operator of an electric personal assistive mobility device shall;

(1) wear a helmet while operating that device;

(2) be 16 years of age or older, except for an operator with a mobility-related disability; and(3)only be a government employee or employee of a commercial establishment performing his assigned duties or an operator with a mobility-related disability.

Moped insurance is the same as motorcycle insurance (as in you get a motorcycle insurance policy). The premium you pay is based on the year, make, model, and cc’s of the moped as well as your age, where you live, and driving record. Moped insurance is usually considerably CHEAPER then auto insurance. The policies I’ve sold usually run from $75/year to $200/year for a 49cc moped with full coverage and a middle-age driver.
