I am going to the Philippines and was thinking to just buy a motor scooter since I am renting an apartment off the beaten path. 50 for provisional, 89 for CBT, bout 20 for the thory and 60 for practical

You do not have to do the theory and practical and as it only ever gets you a scooter licence which will be mostly useless once you are 16 and can go over 50cc there is little point.
The cheaper scooters are the rubbish chinese ones that will cost less to buy but you end up losing on them when you sell after a year or so if you can find a buyer at all.
You need to be looking at a used japanese or french one

I am seriously considering dumping the car and using a scooter.

Hi just been reding up on this question for my dad. At this moment is not compulsory to have 3rd party insurance for a mobility scooter. I think however it would be very advisable to have such an insurance in case the driver has an accident caused by them, for example on a crowded pavement. My friend received a ticket on his scooter for no registration and no insurance. In Las Vegas the regulation states that any scooter over 50cc must meet these requirements. His is 49cc, and we are confused as to what the requirements are.

Here in Florida I have a 49cc scooter and I dont need insurance. I know here I have to register it every year and have a tag on it. I don’t know how some laws are out there but here they enforce it here. I also have to wear eye protection and a helmet if no medical insurance.

I know that in FL, at least, one does *not* need insurance for a scooter that has 50cc, and one does not need a special license. However, once you surpass 50cc (like, for example, 150 or 200cc), then a motorcycle license is required (or so I’ve been told).

So, if I were to cough up $3,399 for a Piaggio Fly 150cc, would I also need insurance? I mean, if I would, I would simply settle for the $1,499 scooter in town made by some random company. I’ve heard good things about it, but Piaggio has name to it, y’know?

Anyway, I was just wondering about the insurance deal.

Dude, NONAME, you’d better be careful on that thing. A friend of mine is a Materials Scientist (Product Liability, etc.) and you wouldn’t believe how many cases he’s had where some kid strapped a motor onto a bike, and then zoomed off and crashed, and then ended up trying to sue the bike company or whatever. Just be careful on that thing, ok?

But no–50ccs already gives me 40-45 mph, but 150ccs would give me around 60, which is much better for me (in my town, 50 mph is basically the unwritten rule when it comes to mph). Also, I could take it places *other* than just around town…

Yes, you need at the least liability insurance for anything over 50cc’s.

You have to be careful about the no-name scooters and be weary on who is saying the good things about them. I love the "I have a so-and-so scooter and I’m satisfied because haven’t had "that" many problems with it." For $1500 you shouldnt have any problems!. If you paid $1500 for a television and it occasionally died, would you still be happy with it? In the past, I’ve owned Yamaha, Kymco and Piaggio scooters and never once had to put a warranty claim in.

Great decision on the Piaggio Fly 150. It’s a fantastic scooter. Has the same internals as the Vespa LX at over $1000 less! (Don’t tell the Vespa snobs, but the Fly is also faster than the LX).

Most likely nothing. Once disabled it is almost impossible to get health insurance.

You can find scooters for sale on Craig’s List, Ebay, and in local classifieds. When people die their scooters are often sold very cheaply. I bought one almost 10 years ago for $500 from a son of a man who had dies – it is still working. I recently got a second one, because I wanted a lighter wieight one – and I bought it new for $900.

Yes, it is illegal to park an uninsured or UNTAXED! vehicle on the road, so why not put it in a friends garage or in a garden?

Ask a local repairs garage if they will sell it for you, they could chain it up outside and put a for sale sign on it for you.

You must have insurance to register the scooter first. If you drive without insurance, you will lose your license not to mention the fines you will have to pay to the court and the dmv.

You could be looking at about $20 per month. One thing is for sure though, ITS WAY CHEAPER THAN CAR INSURANCE.

I am looking for insurance for a 150cc Scooter. I can not find any companies that want less than $1500 a year. Geico quoted me that, but I think they thought I had a motorcycle. Any ideas on companies?

I would assume a scooter would be insured as a motorcycle. It certainly isn’t a car. $1500 seems very expensive, even with the assumption that you are a young person (although you didn’t state your age). Do you have a clean driving record?
