I’ve heard some people say $100 a YEAR. And some $250 a MONTH. Big difference. Who is more correct?

And I’m just wanting a rough guess. Not an exact quote. So please no answers for me to contact a local agent. Thanks!

pretty inexpensive with a clean driving record. if you have driven a car for some time and have a bad record (tickets, dui, at fault accidents, etc) they will consider that when insuring you. so the cleaner, the better

that said here in SoCal i pay roughly $90 a year for basic liability. that is all you need to ride one. i also have uninsured / under-insured coverage that is around $16 a year, and comprehensive coverage which covers theft, fire, incidental damage, loss….essentially all that "my bike is gone" stuff. that is around $116 a year. i have one other thing, too. but i forget what it is.

total cost to me is $224 a year. this is with GEICO Powersports insurance, and the value of the scoot (150cc) is $3,500. i have been licensed 17 years and have a spotless driving record. i am also a new rider with just a permit and have NOT taken the MSF course. if i complete the course and become fully licensed i am told my rate will be even lower

What 600cc motorbike?

Right, I’m looking at getting a 600cc and wanting a bike (not chopper style, or heavy touring) the bike has to be up £1500 max on the market prices and not to bad on the insurance catergory.

Sports/sports touring is more what I’m looking for at the moment, has to be relatively cheap and not extreme to insure, considering a 1996 GSX6R pops around £1000/year fire and thief.
No licensing issues, just want the power -

You want a great bike that can go anywhere? Good mileage and is reasonably comfortable?
Try looking at a BMW F650GS, its a standard (lower insurance) gets 60-70mpg and is a great little bike for tooling through town or out on the highways and byways.

Price wish it’s a good value, even if you need a bit more cash to buy it directly.

There is someone that lives in our road who claims D.L.A i know this person gets higher rate as they boast about the new car they got on motability. This person also drives a motor bike surely if you are in receipt of D.L.A you should not be able to drive a motor bike,this person has just had an motor bike accident not to serious. The other question is would their insurance for the motor bike be invalid as they receive D.L.A. surely it can’t be legal, i cant see an insurance company insuring someone who is suppose to only be able to walk 50 yards.

He sound likes a fraudelent claimer of which there are many sadly

ideally i’m looking for something more along the lines of a 49cc scooter, as insurance etc…is cheaper.

And roughly how expensive are they to run? petrel? how long does a full tank last if your only going short distances?….i’m 21 how much might my insurance be? What are the tests like?

Any general advice or knowledge/ tips would be really greatly appreciated

I’d say Yamaha makes some mean looking scooters. They are very reliable machines. 100-120MPG approx. But I think you’d be better off with a motorcycle. You’ll grow tired of your scoot very soon, trust me! The urge for larger engines looms within!

MY money goes to Yamaha, whether cruiser, sportbike, or cruiser. I hope I was helpful.

The Honda Gyro is a family of small, three-wheeled, single-occupant vehicles sold primarily in Japan, and often used for delivery or express service. These vehicles are tilting three wheelers. They combine a tricycle’s stopped & low-speed stability with a leaning main-body for stability while turning at speed. They resemble a scooter with a small hinged rear pod containing the engine and two drive wheels. This particular variation was developed and patented by George Wallis of G.L.Wallis & Son in Surbiton, Surrey in 1966. It was first marketed in the failed BSA Ariel 3 of 1970, then licensed to Honda. [Honda has built seven vehicles with this configuration. The first Stream was introduced in 1981, followed closely by three other personal transport versions, the Joy, Just, and Road Fox or Sport model found some success in the US with its chopper styling and relaxed riding position. Only the cargo-oriented Gyro are still in production in 2008. These vehicles are all powered by a 49 cc 2-stroke engine, while Honda has a long history of producing 49 cc 4-stroke mopeds and light motorbikes. Honda chooses a 2-stroke engine to provide sufficient power for these relatively heavy vehicles. The 49 cc engine allows the Gyro to be classed as a moped in most countries thus allowing it to take advatage of cheap registration and insurance.

Yes depending on what your using it for as its pretty reliable and easy to ride. If its for fun then no you’d be best off getting something with more power such as an r125 or an rs125. Both these are expensive so not really for you (unless you go second hand).

As for sports bikes new under £2000 you may be asking for too much as even a 50cc sports bike will be about 2500. The only chance of this is if you get a chinese import but DON’T, it’ll only give you trouble.

I live in Ireland and cars & insurance are quite cheap now. I’m about to turn 17 and I want a good car as I have been on the road 1 year already on a 125 motorbike. I’d love an A3 1.6 petrol. Would insurance be crazy? My mate just turned 17 and gt a 2000 Golf and insurance was €2,300 which is cheap for a 17 year old in my opinion. Any sort of answer would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to start this article by saying thank you and Happy Holidays to all the loyal readers of Born To Ride; my sincerest wishes for health, prosperity and happiness in the coming new year.

Last months article addressed potential problems if you were involved in a motorcycle accident and the driver causing the accident did not have the appropriate insurance coverage to repair the property damage to your motorcycle

So, what can you do to protect yourself in this situation? Collision Coverage. Collision coverage on your own insurance policy will pay for the damage to your motorcycle or vehicle. When you are purchasing this coverage please carefully consider the deductible that you choose they generally are in amounts of $250.00, $500.00 or $1,000.00. If you decide to use your own insurance for your Property Damage (PD), your deductible will be subtracted from a reimbursement check you are issued to cover the damages. Some insurance companies will subrogate against the at-fault insurance company, which means your insurance company will attempt to collect your deductible for you which can take up to several months. If you have custom parts on your motorcycle, i.e. pipes, chrome accessories or custom paint, you may want to purchase extra insurance coverage in addition to Collision. Custom Accessories or Optional Equipment coverage will cover these extras. As a rule of thumb, figure out how much you have invested in customization to your motorcycle, for instance, if you have $5,000.00 you would want to purchase $5,000.00 in custom coverage.

If damages to a motorcycle or vehicle are approximately 80% of the value of the motorcycle or vehicle the insurance company is allowed, under Florida Law, to declare that motorcycle or vehicle a total loss. Insurance companies pay book value, not necessarily replacement value or what you might owe to your lien holder. What can you do to protect yourself in this situation if you owe more than the bike is worth? Gap Insurance, which will be the topic of next months exciting article.

Supersports have the highest death rates and worst overall insurance losses among all types of motorcycles, new analyses by the Institute and Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) reveal. Motorcyclists who ride supersports have driver death rates per 10,000 registered motorcycles nearly 4 times higher than rates for motorcyclists who ride all other types of bikes.

Supersports are built on racing platforms but modified for the highway and sold to consumers. They’re especially popular with riders younger than 30. With their lightweight and powerful engines, supersports are all about speed. They typically have more horsepower per pound than other bikes. A 2006 model Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, for example, produces 111 horsepower and weighs 404 pounds. In contrast, the 2006 model Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide, a touring motorcycle, produces 65 horsepower and weighs 788 pounds.

“Supersport motorcycles are indeed nimble and quick, but they also can be deadly,” says Anne McCartt, Institute senior vice president for research. “These bikes made up less than 10 percent of registered motorcycles in 2005 but accounted for over 25 percent of rider deaths. Their insurance losses were elevated, too.”

Motor vehicles accident between bike and car.?

I just had an accident this morning with my motorbike. I was driving normally around 50-60 km/h and suddenly the car in front of me started to slow down. I thought that she was going left to park or something, and i decided to overtake her from the right side. There weren’t any cars opposite of me, and no turn signals by the woman in front of me. While i was overtaking her she suddenly turns right and i hit direct in her doors. I tried to brake but nothing was helping in that situation because the distance between us was few meters. Everything went good the ambulance came, took me to the hospital, the police etc. The woman was shocked she said the she didn’t see me coming. That’s everything i know for now. The thing is I don’t have any insurance on my bike, and I’m assuming that she has full insurance on her car ( It was a black mercedes s). What I’m interested in is whose fault will be if the police can’t find out does she have turned the turn signals or not. Am I going to pay for her repairs to the insurance company or not? The most important thing that I am okay, i have only some minor injuries on my knees, nothing serious. If it wasn’t the equipment I don’t know where i would be now.

This was in Australia, not England. And that does make a difference. In England, the answer would be different. But since this was in Australia, this was completely your fault. You were in the process of committing a traffic infraction when this happened, and that traffic infraction caused the accident. It is illegal to "overtake" or pass on the right. You will get a ticket for doing that (unless the police officer feels really sorry for you). Plus the responsibility for the accident is yours. The other driver’s insurance company will come after you to pay.

The moral of the story.
SLOW DOWN
Obey traffic laws
Keep a proper distance between you and the car in front of you so that you can stop in time.
Don’t guess what other cars are going to do. Leave open all possibilities and be able to deal with them all safely.
Oh, and I hope you have figured out WHY it’s illegal to overtake on the right by now

Bought myself a speedfight 2, 50cc, 1999 reg. Could anyone tell me good, cheap moped insurance companies which don’t charge stupid amounts?

Lexham Insurance (http://www.lexhaminsurance.co.uk ) are good for mopeds and scooters (best price is over the phone and haggling usually helps).

Another place to check is The Bike Insurer (http://www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk ) – it’s a price comparison site for motorcycle & moped insurance.

The above two are the ones I recommend trying first but you could also try using the bike insurance sections on confused.com, comparethemarket.com and gocompare.com

Make sure you get quotes for all levels of cover (Fully Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft and Third Party Only) as you may be surprised by the results.

By the way, when searching for "moped insurance", you might be better searching for "motorcycle insurance" as nearly all motorcycle insurance companies cover mopeds.

Say I buy and old car to be broken up for spares. If it is towed home and I steer it am I driving a car? Say some vital part was removed like the carburetor then it is no longer a motor car?

Also if I get an old motor bike and push it home am I driving it?

I don’t want to be done for ‘Driving’ without MOT, road tax and insurance.

At what point does a car no longer be called a car?

a car is always a car and cannot even be towed without insurance and road tax and MOT it has to be put on a trailer towed by a fully insured, taxed and tested car

I have a 1991 Honda goldwing that I would like to insure. However since we live in Michigan we only have about six months of comfortable, leisure riding.

I have a 9/3 policy for my 2001 Goldwing with Progressive.
3 months fire and theft, remaining 9 months full coverage. That helps reduce costs.
All you can do is shop around.

Rebuild my totaled bike or buy a new bike?

I was hit by a car and the insurance company totaled my bike. I was thinking about getting a new bike, but now a bike builder has offered to rebuild my wrecked bike for the price of parts only, no charge for labor. It’s the front-end of the bike that needs to be replaced, from the gas tank, forward. The motor and rear-end are ok. Any advice?
The steering head is damaged, and the builder does have a another frame.
Thanks for the input guys. I am leaning towards getting a new bike. The bike builder and his wife are my best friends, and I know they want to help me out, but I don’t know that I will be able to trust a rebuild.

I agree…before you rebuild anything, be sure to remove the triples and inspect the steering head races and bearings. I had a CBR that was totaled and the inside of the steering head, where the races seat was cracked all the way around and I didnt see it until I removed the races. This pic shows the bottom of the steering yoke and you can see where it cracked all the way around the seat for the races.

You might be better off taking the money and just getting another bike. I had to replace the whole frame, which basically is a complete teardown of the bike to the motor block and the rear end. Its a lot of work.

I have a job & have paid my car insurance fully each month since I was 16 it was expected of me. I also tend to pay for my motorcycle insurance I have 2 jobs & go to College. I have had 3 speeding tickets 2 in 2008 & one in 2009 2 were around 10MPH over & the 3rd was around 15ish. I have my reasons for speeding regardless drive down the interstate & find more then 3 people that don’t speed..SERIOUSLY I HAD PLACES TO BE cops are prejudice. Anyway I want a 02 or newer Motorcycle & state farm is my current provider although I know that are Top Of The Line & I just want the cheapest insurance for motorcycles. I understand my rates will be higher then average but I turn 21 in a year and it can only drop. I just need some Input here. Thank you!

I want the Best+Cheapest Rates &best premium. That is it. Nothing else. IDC how old you are or if you still haven’t had your license revoked. I barely sped 3 times & gave that information out for informational purposes only I abide by the speed limit. Please keep your crude comments to yourself & do everybody on yahoo answers a big deal of help & answer the question then MOVE ON!

Get an old non sport model bike. Sport models are much higher insurance, especially with a bad driving record. Buy it outright so you do not have to get full coverage. Take a safety course for the discount it gives you on insurance. If you can, find a way to garage the bike since that is normally a discount as well.

Then call an agent or hit the websites to get a quote. You are going to need to give them some information on the bike so you need to have an idea of what you are going to buy.

From my experience in Colorado most of my buddies carry Geico since they came in with the lowest premium. Multi-vehicle discount or having a history with an insurance company can sometimes beat them, so make sure to call you current insurance company.

Warning, under 21 with multiple speeding tickets means you are going to pay through the nose. You will see a small drop at 21, a bigger drop at 25, and some major drops if you slow down and let those tickets drop off your record.
