The BMW Z3 burst upon the scene with lots of attention. The most visually pleasing feature was the gun barrel shaped body, along with Pierce Brosnan in the James Bond flick GoldenEye shortly before its introduction for model-year 1996. This great setup, along with all of the buzz of this being BMW’s first mass market roadster, made the Z3 an instant success. The 1995 Neiman Marcus catalog ran with a luxury sports car as the ubber Christmas gift, with more orders placed than it could handling, instantly selling out the car.
The public still very much digs the BMW Z3, and actively eye balls this car. Although the chassis of the BMW Z3 was somewhat behind the technology curve, the Z3 is still a stylish and zippy roadster putting new energy back into the BMW label. In the beginning, this was offered with only a 1.9-liter 138-horsepower inline-4 engine, a 2.8-liter inline-6 making 190 hp became available in 1997. (They could be differentiated by wider rear fenders.) This was a great straight-6 engine with smooth as silk power, and a kicken stereo, made the Z3 come alive. Handling was impeccable. The Z3′s ride is a great middle ground, those who want a zip of power every now and then, to Sunday drivers for comfort. And from a buying and owning perspective, the Z3 neatly straddled the line between entry-level roadsters like the Miata and more out-of-reach models like the 911.Going top down in a Z3, you will need a windscreen.
With all this, the Z3 is not immune to shortcomings. For the drawbacks, some of the interior components had a plastic feel to them, and tall people are certainly restricted in this car. The biggest drawback of the Z3 was the plastic rear window that could yellow in strong sunlight; just ask those Texas Z3 owners. With the body styling, there is no middle ground: either like it or hate it. The, for the Z3 with the top-down, you will need a windscreen.
But these imperfections are pretty minor. A used BMW Z3 is very much the way to go, since the newer Z4 has depreciated the price of these. If you’re thinking about a used roadster, then the BMW should certainly be upon your list of possibilities.
